Fungi design: The Future of Plastic

Tuesday 15 July 2014

Italian designer Maurizio Montalti has created a series of objects made using fungal mycelia, which he proposes as a tangible alternative to plastic.

Developed within Officina Corpuscoli’s project The Growing Lab, Montalti's work is currently the subject of a solo show called The Future of Plastic at Plart Foundation in Naples.

Overall, the process used to make these objects is a natural one, and can be compared to a sort of slow 3D printing, in which the speed of printing corresponds to the time fungi require to grow.

Plart Foundation is focused on research related to the recovery, restoration and conservation of design and art works produced in plastic. Homebuildlife subscribers can read our full report on the initiative here.
