Le Corbusier at MoMA

Thursday 20 June 2013

Le Corbusier's summer house has been rebuilt by Italian design brand Cassina, which is the exclusive producer of the architect's work. The house will be showcased at the exhibition Le Corbusier: An Atlas of Modern Landscapes, which runs until 23 September at New York's MoMA.

The "Cabanon" was created and built by the architect to be used as his own holiday home, and is the only building he ever designed for himself, a reminder that the very origins of architecture lie in the design of the primitive hub.

The modern log cabin answers the most essential physical needs of its inhabitants, without unnecessary embellishments. It is a plywood cocoon in which most of the furniture is built-in.

The interior space is 14 square metres, the size determined by the modernists as the minimum for social housing, showing how rewarding simplicity can be.
