The new embroidery

Thursday 16 September 2010

Following the resurgence of knitting and crochet over the past few years, cross stitch is the latest arts and crafts practice to be modernised.

WGSN-homebuildlife will publish its full analysis of the trend this week; to whet your appetite, here’s a sneak peek at one aspect of the movement in particular.

The new embroidery has been taken up by a number of male enthusiasts, dubbed ‘manbroiderers’. Mr X Stitch, founder of “the number one contemporary embroidery and needlecraft blog on the planet” (in his own words), is one of the most well-known.

There is a Manbroidery blog and Flickr stream, while a Manbroidery manifesto is currently under construction. Popular stitching topics include superheroes, characters from cult films and video games, and song lyrics. American manbroiderer Aubrey Longley-Cook, in particular, creates beautiful cross stitch pieces.
